DESCRIPTION

‘LONG SITTING IN MEDITATION’ is a handmade extract from the Samadhi handbook on the subject of our dear body, as it has to learn to sit comfortably during meditation. Some people just aim to calm down for 5 to 15 minutes, in which case the body will usually not cause much trouble. Others want to reach a state of profound inner wellness and meditate without moving for 15 to 45 minutes. In this case, the body will already cause pain in many people if they have not developed a fully relaxed sitting posture. How to do so is the main subject of this booklet, evolving from a simple Cross-Legged Pose with props over the Liberated Pose towards the full Lotus Pose. Those that sit for one hour or more seek that true merging with the Self known as Samadhi. As this healing trance state produces a total loss of body consciousness, our posture will need to be stable enough to support itself. As we take our meditation practice more seriously, we need to take the best possible care of our body, love it as a child. That includes balancing its elements and energies and making the sitting without back support a way of life. To release stress energy from the body prior to relaxing the mind, we can use a variety of corpse pose exercises and simple stretches, up to a more general Asana practice.

This booklet is part of a series of small books extracted from “Samadhi – The Deep Meditation Handbook”, a two-volume work with over 600 pages on reaching the deepest states of meditation. Samadhi is the highest of yogic practices, a trance state where body consciousness is entirely lost and a gradual full merging with the Self is gained. It requires daily sustained meditation practice, supported by some major changes to our lifestyle, attitudes and desires. It is nevertheless everyone’s birthright, even when living as a householder yogi.

Quotes

The entirety of the yogic tradition is revealed as originating from the Self, bridging the illusion of a gap between nonduality and other practices.

The practitioners of yoga postures, breath, mantra, or meditation should not be confused about whether all of that is helpful on the spiritual path, or just some distraction produced by the ego.
